Acupuncture has received widespread attention in recent years as a complementary therapy for assisted reproductive technology (such as in vitro fertilization, IVF). Some studies and clinical practices have shown that acupuncture may have a positive impact on the IVF process through multiple mechanisms. Many doctors will suggest to do acupuncture 1-2 months before IVF.
1. Improve uterine blood flow
Acupuncture may increase endometrial blood flow, promote endometrial thickening and receptivity by regulating the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems, thereby improving embryo implantation rate.
2. Regulate endocrine function
Some studies believe that acupuncture may balance hormone levels (such as reducing cortisol, regulating FSH/LH ratio), improve ovarian response, and is especially beneficial for patients with diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
3. Relieve stress and anxiety
The psychological stress of patients during IVF may affect the success rate. Acupuncture may reduce anxiety and depression by stimulating the release of endorphins, and indirectly improve reproductive outcomes.
4. Improve clinical pregnancy rate
Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that acupuncture before and after embryo transfer may improve clinical pregnancy rate (e.g. Paulus protocol).
